Clay Modeling Education Reaches a New Milestone

BOMI has proudly co-authored a brand-new university textbook on clay modeling in collaboration with Professor Zhang from Jinhua University of Vocational Technology.

This textbook marks the first systematic teaching material in China that integrates academic theory, professional modeling techniques, and industrial expertise. It provides students with a comprehensive pathway — from understanding clay properties to mastering essential shaping skills, and eventually to building complete automotive exteriors.

The book is structured in progressive stages:

  • Beginner Level: Introducing basic clay tools, flat-surface training, and simple geometric shapes such as rectangular and cylindrical bodies.

  • Intermediate Level: Moving into practical product design tasks such as mascot modeling and scooter headlight designs, with an emphasis on proportion, detail, and design logic.

  • Advanced Level: Tackling full-scale automotive exterior design, including PU core structures, clay application, and refinement of large-scale surfaces.

Each chapter contains clear task objectives, step-by-step demonstrations, and assessment methods, ensuring that students can build both technical proficiency and creative problem-solving abilities.

To make learning more dynamic, the textbook is supplemented with QR codes linking to instructional videos, allowing students to follow along with real-life demonstrations. This integration of print and digital resources creates an interactive learning environment, bridging classroom theory and studio practice.

Clay modeling remains at the heart of the design process. It enables iteration, instinct, and refinement that only come from human touch. While digital tools continue to evolve, clay offers an irreplaceable tactile dimension to automotive and product design education.

By contributing industry knowledge and resources to this project, BOMI is helping shape the next generation of designers. The textbook is expected to be introduced across universities in China, empowering students to learn clay modeling from scratch and to carry forward the craftsmanship spirit that underpins world-class design.
